“See how God manifested his love for us: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us and we have become just through his blood. With much more reason now he will save us from any condemnation. Once enemies, we have been reconciled with God through the death of his Son; with much more reason now we may be saved through his life.  Not only that; we feel secure in God because of Christ Jesus, our Lord, through whom we have been reconciled.” (Romans 5:8-11)  We are certainly unworthy of such a Holy Redeemer dying for our sins.  In the Old Testament, there were no sacrifices pleasing enough to God the Father that could obtain for us full forgiveness and salvation.  All were imperfect.  All were impure in some way or another.  Therefore, God the Son, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity was then sent to the world by God the Father, because “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life.  But, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world; instead, through him the world is to be saved. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned.” (John 3, 16-18)

We all have sinned and fallen short from the Grace of God.  Our life is a continuing struggle against the forces of evil that surround us.  We have many times allowed the three enemies of our soul, (the devil, the world, and the flesh) to tempt us to the point of displeasing and disappointing the great God of Love.  But know this, my dear friend, and hear well what God tells you now; “For a moment, in an outburst of anger, I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I have had mercy on you, says Yahweh, your Redeemer. (Isaiah 54,8)  The Lord is kind and merciful.  Though we may have lived a life of sin, Jesus comes to renew us.  He is the God of mercy who cleanses us from our sins, and makes us holy.  “So know that Yahweh, your God, is the true and faithful God. He keeps his covenant, and his love reaches to the thousandth generation for those who love him and fulfill his commandments.” (Deuteronomy 7,9)

God’s faithfulness moved Him to send His only Son to this world to show you His love!  “I have loved you with an everlasting love” says God in Jeremiah 31,3.  Oh, how great is Your love for us!  So great is God’s love that He sacrifices His Only Son Jesus, a much better and holier sacrifice than Isaac, Abraham’s son.  From His Holy Cross, He pours out abundant love upon us, a love that touches our hearts and moves us to realize how we have displeased our Lord, who is only deserving of love and more love. Our Father tells us, “I will pour out on the family of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of love and supplication. They will look at the one who was pierced and mourn for him as for an only child, weeping bitterly as for a firstborn.” (Zechariah 12, 10)  How great indeed is the love of God.  His mercy endures forever.  If we ever doubted God’s Infinite mercy, let us be reminded of what the Word of God tells us in Lamentations 3, 22 “Yahweh's love abides unceasingly.  His compassion is never consumed; every morning it is renewed.  And his love remains ever faithful."  Therefore my soul says, "My portion is Yahweh.  On him shall I rely."

When we pray for something that we need, especially something we need to assist us in our salvation, God answers us in an amazing manner. And so God has answered the prayer of humanity in Psalm 31, 17 “Make your face shine upon your servant; save me in your love.”  Jesus’ sweet and holy face shines upon us from the Holy Cross, and looks at us with the eyes of a true and ever-faithful Friend.  “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; remain in my love.  You will remain in my love if you keep my commandments, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love.  I have told you all this, that my own joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you.  There is no greater love than this, to give one's life for one's friends; and you are my friends if you do what I command you.  I shall not call you servants any more, because servants do not know what their master is about. Instead I have called you friends, since I have made known to you everything I learned from my Father.  You did not choose me; it was I who chose you and sent you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. And everything you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.  This is my command, that you love one another.” (John 15, 9-17)

“Then, what shall we say? Shall we keep on sinning so that grace may come more abundantly?  Can we live again in sin? Of course not: we are now dead regarding sin.  You know that in baptism, which unites us to Christ, we are all baptized and plunged into his death.  By this baptism in his death, we were buried with Christ, and, as Christ was raised from among the dead by the Glory of the Father, so we begin walking in a new life.  It was an image of his death when we were grafted in him, and so we will also share in his resurrection.  We know that our old self was crucified with Christ, so as to destroy what of us was sin, so that we may no longer serve sin - if we are dead, we are no longer in debt to sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe we will also live with Him.” (Roman 6, 1-7)  We are a chosen people of God.  Let us remember how Jesus suffered for us, because of His great love for us, and always carry the image of Christ Crucified, who is deserving of all our love expressed in our every thought, word, and action.  For “God has chosen you because of his love for you and to fulfill the oath he made to your fathers. Therefore, with a firm hand Yahweh brought you out from slavery in Egypt, from the power of Pharaoh.” (Deuteronomy 7, 8)  - May Jesus, who suffered and died for us for our forgiveness, and who rose from the dead for our salvation and to open the gates of Heaven, bless you, love you, heal you, and sanctify you through His Passion, Death and Resurrection. – Alvin Peña
